WHEREAS, throughout the history of the Commonwealth of Virginia, generations of brave men and women have answered the call to serve in the United States Armed Forces, willingly placing themselves in harm's way to protect our nation with some making the ultimate sacrifice; and

WHEREAS, on Memorial Day, the Commonwealth joins families, friends, and communities across the United States in solemn remembrance, paying tribute to the military personnel who gave their lives in service to our country, and honoring the profound sacrifices made in the cause of liberty; and

WHEREAS, since World War II, thousands of Virginians have died in military service, and their names and legacies are preserved at the Virginia War Memorial as a lasting testament to their valor, patriotism, and enduring commitment to the ideals for which they fought; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia remains forever indebted to the service members who have died in defense of the United States of America; and

WHEREAS, Memorial Day serves as a powerful reminder of the extraordinary courage and devotion of those who made the ultimate sacrifice and provides the opportunity for all Virginians to honor their memory; and

WHEREAS, the observance of Memorial Day also provides an opportunity to support the families of the fallen whose strength, resilience, and enduring love preserve the legacy of their loved ones; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth recognizes that the sacrifices of fallen service members continue to strengthen our collective resolve to uphold the principles of justice, liberty, and freedom;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Abigail D. Spanberger, do hereby recognize May 25, 2026, as MEMORIAL DAY in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
